Singing with a Local Filk Group
Singing with a Local Filk Group [by Susan Shepherd 11] For me, one of the greatest things about MIT is the culture. Its hard to describe, but theres a peculiar mix of scientific and technology-related jargon, crazy ideas (These habanero peppers arent nearly hot enough. I agree. What do you say to refining the capsaicin to get a really spicy dish? Actuallythat would work. Okay, lets do it!), and a lot of creativity from people who enjoy doing very offbeat things. Better yet, since MIT has a lot of sub-communities, its easy for you to learn about neat stuff through the grapevine. If youre interested in film-making, you might take a class in it. Later you might hear from a fellow classmate about this interesting club, the Lecture Series Committee, which shows films every weekend for a relatively low price. While hanging out at LSC, you might hear about an upcoming play In short, there is a definite geometric progression which takes place. The larger the number of neat things you get involved with, the more things you hear about and have the chance to particupate in. And thats how I discovered MASSFILCa group of people, some of them college-age, many older (including a fair number of MIT alumni) who get together once a month to sing science fiction and fantasy folk music, called filk for short. Filk music can be awfully hard to define. Strictly speaking, it is music played by and for members of the science fiction fandomthe people who read hard sf books, who dressed up for the midnight showings of the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, and who show up to conventions to meet others who share their interests. More broadly, crazy or offbeat music with a nerdy, fantastic or science fiction theme can qualify. Jonathan Coultons Still Alive, Weird Al Yankovics song The Saga Begins, and Leslie Fishs Hope Eyrie can all count as filk, depending on who you ask. I really found out about filk music through my addiction to fantasy and science fiction books. If youre familiar with Tolkiens work, or Garth Nixs Abhorsen trilogy, or Susan Coopers The Dark Is Rising sequence, then you know that many authors include poems or songs in their novels. When I was younger, I put some of these to music. It was just a hobby for me, and I assumed I was the only person who would be interested in that kind of activity. Like bowmaking, or raising chickens, or cultivating irises, I assumed that most of my peers just wouldnt be interested. Then I got to MIT, and discovered that those unusual hobbies werent all that unusual after all. I encountered more people who had memorized poems and songs from those and other books. I also started collecting filk music. Pretty quickly, I had collected songs like Kill the Zombies (a helpful song about what to do when the zombie apocalypse comes) by Songs to Wear Pants To, Merlin, a song about the legendary wizard, sung by Kathy Mar, and the love song Finite Simple Group (of Order Two) by the Klein Four. Recently, after Id learned that several of my friends were also were fans of filk music, I attended Boskone, an annual science fiction convention held locally. There, I wandered into a meeting of filk singers singing The Last Saskatchewan Pirate, and just like that, I was hooked. One of the wonderful things about the filk meetings is that you arent required to singbut anyone can, if they wish to. Song requests are also popular. If you enjoy watching Babylon Five but dont know any filk songs on that subject, you can ask around and someone else will probably start singing Five Years (lyrics can be found here, on the authors website). Some songs, like Pirate, mentioned above, have choruses that are a treat to join in on. And if you enjoy guitar or the flute or the drums, instruments are also welcome. The subject matter is nearly unique to the genre. A typical meeting may feature one or more songs promoting space exploration, several about various aspects of nerd culturefor example, Talk Like A Pirate Day is about the holiday and those who celebrate it, and Tech Support includes a hilarious word-for-word transcript of an actual calland numerous parodies. Not all the songs at meetings have to do with science fiction, however. Word of God by Catherine Faber is about evolution and the scientific method. A Boy and His Frog was written to commemorate Jim Hensons work; it is sung from the point of view of Kermit in mourning. (Its better than it sounds.) Traditional songs and folk songs are also welcome; Ive heard White Squall and Siuil a Run at meetings, and in truth, as long as youre interested in a song, no ones going to be annoyed at you for sharing it. Filking isnt the most common pastime, Im sure, although I do suspect that the number of fans who have memorized The Man They Call Jayne, The Birthday Dirge, or Aerlinn in Edhil o Imladris is larger than we usually think. But I am glad to have learned about it, and gladder still to have found out in my sophomore year. This way, I know I and my friends can participate in the local meetings for years to come.

5 Ideas on How to Make a Presentation Engaging
To make a presentation is a simple task but the experienced presenters know that it is important to know how to make a presentation engaging. Making a presentation has become a practice common in all the spheres of life: beginning from the secondary school classes and ending in the great conference rooms of big corporations, people use the presentations to render their ideas and share the information with the others. Nevertheless, the experience shows that chaotic presentation of the ideas with the help of the slides filled with plain text would not remain as a positive and useful experience in the audiences memory. Instead, the presenters may address the following pieces of advice that would let him/her know how to make a presentation engaging. Make Your Presentation Sweet and Short While writing the content for each slide, try to focus on the sufficient information. It shows that the audience appreciates it when the information is visually concise and does not include the long explanations. Using the bullets and different fonts would enhance the visual perception and make the presentation well-memorized. Adding the relevant and funny pictures would increase the success of the presentation since they would make it more relaxing and captivating. Ice-Breakers Will Melt the Ice Walls To make the presentation engaging, the speaker should interact with its audience. This may be done with a bunch of ice-breakers that would eliminate the imaginative barriers between the presenter and the audience and will establish a reciprocal communication. Beginning with asking the audience several questions related to the topic of the presentation would be a good start. Then, the presenter may give people take some time to think over the question and discuss it. A Spoonful of Humor Those trying to make their presentation engaging try to catch the audiences attention with the overload of humor which later results in an unserious treatment of the topic. In fact, the word engaging is not a synonym to funny hence, the presenter should strive for making the presentation gripping and involving. Concise and to The Point Getting to know much interesting information, the presenters want to put everything in the presentation. Fortunately or not, the informationally oversaturated presentations do not remain in the audiences memories for a long time. Losing the attention of the audience would lead to the fail that is why the pace of the information rendition should remain both lively and easy to follow. People Love Stories Every presentation is a journey: the presenter invites the audience to the alien place showing its beauty, interest, and peculiarities. Visiting the other places, people expect something interesting and in order to satisfy this wish, it would be good to make up a story. It appears that the storytelling is more productive than the long ranting of the presenter since the audience lives through the experience and sees the significance and relevance of the information provided by the presenter. In such way the audience is already given the options of applying the information in the real life.

She wants to be loved and accepted by both the whites and blacks. She feels that absence of complexion and blue eyes is the main reason for poor personality. She is forced to long for blue eyes like those of white children and surrounded by cultural message that she is ugly by definition; she can achieve peace only by retreating into schizophrenia. The agony and pain of Pecola is all the more worse when her own father outraged her modesty. She is made to live a life of fetters for no fault of her own. The people around her view her as a pitiable person reduced to nothing. Her desire is something which cannot be fulfilled. The world that Pecola lives in is one which reduces persons to mere objects. Toni Morrison exposes the radical effects of racism on the black girls. The pitiable plight of Pecola is the outcome of fierce racism and interracial conflicts of myths. The failure of Pecola is not only because of her hopeless desire for blue eyes but it is also because of her lack of self confidence. She has a deep rooted feeling that she is ugly and the intensity of feeling is such that she finds it difficult to uproot it even from her sub conscious mind. When such a feeling is accompanied by external humiliation it is her inferior complex that gets aggravated. Her mother calls her ugly since her childhood days and her father hates her because she is ugly. Her parents fail to give Pecola the necessary love and affection. Pecolas struggle for identity is defined by her everlasting desire to be loved. Her family and community made it impossible for her to be ever sanely content. Cholly Breedlove, the father and eventually the rapist of Pecola is a bastard. He was born to an unwed mother, his father ran away the day of his birth and his mother abandoned him three days later. This horrible beginning reflects his every day views and actions. After the death of his legal guardian (his aunt), Cholly decides that as an inner mission he needs to find his father to find himself. To understand who he is, he has to look into his past; a long search ends in an extremely disappointing and crushing experience. Chollys private life is still painful. Being a black victim he is forced to have sex with two white police officers. Forcing him to have sex they just chuckled from behind. These episodes left a huge impact on him that eventually caused him to do something that would not have happened had he had proper guidance in those areas. Chollys family and his community contributed in making the man he became and thus his eventual downfall. Almost all characters in The Bluest Eye are after something. Having lost themselves they look in for their identity. Pecola yearns for blue eyes. At the end of the novel she believes that she has those eyes. She thinks that people treat her funny because of her blue eyes and she has learned to accept that happily. She yearned for the acceptance and love of society seen through her eyes. No matter if that acceptance and love were there or not, she thought it was and therefore was able to survive. Pecolas search for her identity ends in her insanity. Although she is not accepted by society for reasons she does not understand, she puts exclusion from society into terms she can comprehend. Society influences her identity and moulds her into what she becomes by not giving her the guidance and approval she needs. In the same way Cholly found himself separated from the community. He does an act of inhumanity and he could not live with the realization of the monster he had become and he disappeared. As a man he does not know who he is. W. E. Du Bois in his book, The Souls of Black Folk gauges the deleterious impact of racism on cultural self consciousness and identity. The term, ?double consciousness, refers to two distinct realitiesa psychological conflict between opposing cultural world views and debilitating resolution in which extremely derived and distorted perceptions of the self constitute a single, but alienated self- consciousness. Du Bois further notes that it is a peculiar sensation, this double consciousness, this sense of always looking at ones self through the eyes of others. The Bluest Eye inspired a climate of revolution and evolving black consciousness of the sixties, a period characterized by an almost evangelical struggle for personal and racial identity. Morrison chooses the obsession of the blacks with an American standard of beauty that seems both inescapable and destructive. The novelist states that that concept of physical beauty as a virtue is one of the dumbest, most pernicious and destructive ideas of the western world.

Ethical Dilemma Pesonal Experience - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 872 Downloads: 1 Date added: 2019/05/18 Category Society Essay Level High school Tags: Ethical Dilemma Essay Did you like this example? Working as an RN in Washington State, I was on the outside of an unfortunate situation involving a male patient. This did not involve me, but it became such a big deal that everyone was made aware of the details over time. The patient was an older man who had recently gone through a myriad of medical conditions following a surgery. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Ethical Dilemma: Pesonal Experience" essay for you Create order It is a common story for someone his age where an older person has a surgery which fixes the main problem, but leads to numerous other problems as a result of inactivity, poor nutrition, and depression. The depression stemmed from the recent passing of a loved one, and was only compounded by his medical issues. This patient was discharged and was being followed by case management, with regularly scheduled home visits by therapy and nursing staff. During one particular visit, therapy noticed a weapon near a chair and asked why it was there and the patient hinted (after an apparently long visit/discussion) that he intended to end his life at some point with it. The therapist also reported that the patient demanded nobody get involved. It is a well-known fact that older males are more likely than anyone to commit suicide, but in Washington State, attempts at suicide are not a crime, and neither are indications of a possible future attempt. As a result, reporting this to authorities wouldnt have accomplished anything except probably encouraging the patient to carry out his plan to end his life sooner than he originally intended. The therapist reported this to the case manager who reported this to the rest of the patients care team. Thankfully, those involved in his care were able to legally help prevent his suicide through tactful discussion with him which ended with him voluntarily surrendering his weapon (to police who destroyed it). The patient also voluntarily admitted himself to an inpatient psych program on the east side of the city he lived in. I dont know how long the patient survived after that, or whether or not he followed-through on his thoughts of suicide as I moved to St. Louis, plus this was a psych case and patient details are strictly confidential. Immediately following the therapists reporting of the situation, we were reminded of the American Nurses Association (ANA) code of ethics and discussed our way through this dilemma as a group. The main goal of the care team was to continue to help the patient recover from his medical issues, in addition to preventing his suicide. When the therapist reported the situation to the RN case manager, the case manager was obligated to act on the information to uphold the ethical principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, and fidelity. The case manager knew the patient didnt want anyone involved, but provision 3 of the Code of Ethics for Nurses states that the nurse promotes, advocates for, and protects the rights, health, and safety of the patient (ANA 2015a, pg. 9). In addition, provision 4 states that the nurse has authority, accountability, and responsibility for nursing practice; makes decisions; and takes action consistent with the obligation to promote health and to provide optimal c are (ANA 2015a, pg. 15). In her reporting this to the rest of the care team, the case manager upheld standard 5B of the Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice, 3rd edition which states that the registered nurse employs strategies to promote health and a safe environment (ANA 2015b, pg. 65). Her actions led to the patient surrendering his weapon and entering a psych facility to deal with his suicidal ideation and depression. The patient was acting within the law when he stated his intentions to the therapist, and had not been deemed unfit to make decisions by a doctor so he couldnt be forced into being helped. He possessed the capacity, and therefore the right, to be autonomous. Autonomy means that individuals are respected and allowed to make their own decisions about issues that affect them. It means we do not interfere if a person genuinely has the capacity to decide. (OGrady, et al., 2015, pg. 212). The patient had the right to make his own decisions, but the case manager and therapist acted against the demands of the patient, and were allowed to share the information with his care team as they were all somehow directly involved with his care and legally allowed to share information with one another. The therapist and case manager had to decide whether or not to oblige the patients demand, or to do what they could to try and sway the patient towards voluntary help. Multiple meetings with nursing staff took place regarding what to do in situations like this should they arise again. As a team, we had different opinions on what could or should be done in these instances. What we all agreed on though, was that it was in all our best interests to embody whats outlined in the ANAs code of ethics, and really familiarize ourselves with the laws of whatever state we are working in. Working within the confines of the ANAs code of ethics, as well as within the law, the care team was able t o solve the dilemma and prevent the patients suicide up to the time I left for St. Louis.

Pepperoni in Italian Is Not the Same as in English
Its one of the most common mistakes Americans make when referring to food in Italy. The New York Times article, Savoring Tuscany a Glass at a Time, opens with this (un)appetizing line: If the idea of wandering through a village dating back to Etruscan times before stopping off at a family-run restaurant for a plate of pollo con pepperoni (chicken with peppers) and a glass of Chianti sounds good to you. Heres the Twist Well, no, in fact, that doesnt sound right at all! Pepperoni is a spicy Italian-American variety of dry salami usually made of pork and beef and is frequently used as a pizza topping in American pizzerias. Peperoni, on the other hand, is what Americans recognize as peppers, and what the recipe calls for. Chicken surrounded by those large circles of pepperoni one normally associates with take-out pizza on a Friday night? No thanks! The plate should read polloà con peperoni, with one P. The Best Advice For those traveling to Italy who want to sample authentic pepperoni, ask for salame piccante, salamino piccante (spicy salami, generally typical of Calabria), or salsiccia Napoletana piccante, a spicy dry sausage from Naples.

Rhetorical Analysis Of Cleaning The Final Feminist...
Rough Draft: Rhetorical Analysis Letter Dear Jessica Grose author of, Cleaning: The Final Feminist Frontier, First of all, I would like to extend my appreciation to you for addressing one of the major issue being faced by many American women and women across the world. Your argumentââ¬â¢s validity is clear as the men in American society hardly participate in house cleaning and they prefer to take care of children or dishes such small tasks than splitting the housework. In contrasting with men and womenââ¬â¢s participation in house cleaning, I think you have successfully used ethos, pathos and logos to both sides of men and women perspective across the world. In detailed, you started off using of pathos by a story which describes a specificâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Statics shows that women deserve some help in cleaning because they are humans and they do probably double or more of housework than men do. Therefore, you were able to successfully bring the attention of your audience by appealing to logos. Moving further from your appeal to logos, I would like to address how you appealed to ethos the audience learned that how you were cleaning your house even when you were ââ¬Ëeight months pregnant.ââ¬â¢ The audience knows that your husband like most husbands argue with you when it comes to cleaning even though you were pregnant. It is a common knowledge that men would look for excuses when it comes to house cleaning as you mentioned in your article they admit ââ¬Å"because it sucks.â⬠As women, you will remain alone to clean your home mostly alone. It is becoming a full-time job that only you are responsible for cleaning aga in and again, every time when your husband and children make a mess. In addition, you are a part time working women and then you have the responsibility of cleaning your house as well and you manage to do it without having a single line on your forehead just like all the women do. Moreover, throughout the article, you continued to build great arguments. For example, you used credible sources by sociologistsShow MoreRelatedOne Significant Change That Has Occurred in the World Between 1900 and 2005. The Primary Care Clinic Free Essays
Discuss the key political, economic, and social forces that may have influenced the development of the clinic. Economic and social conditions that affect peopleââ¬â¢s lives determine their health. People who are poor are less likely to seek proper medical care, as opposed to people who are of middle-class status and above. We will write a custom essay sample on The Primary Care Clinic or any similar topic only for you Order Now Citizens with more social status, money, and education have a plethora of choices and control over things, such as the neighborhoods, their salaries, occupational opportunities, etc. Jin, Shah, Svoboda, September, 1995, 153(5)) Dennis Raphael of the CSJ Foundation for Research and Education, reinforces this concept: ââ¬Å"Social determinants of health are the economic and social conditions that shape the health of individuals, communities, and jurisdictions as a whole. Social determinants of health are the primary determinants of whether individuals stay healthy or become ill. â⬠(Raphael, 2008) The development of clinics has become increasingly more important since the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010. Politics influence clinics because when laws such as these are put in place, federal funds will follow. These acts will make healthcare more accessible to millions of people in the United States. (Hobbs, Morton, Swerissen, Anderson, 2010) What would be a good mission statement? ââ¬Å"To provide exemplary medical care to our patients, thus improving the health, wellness, and productivity of our community as a whole. Expect to receive the same level of service and dedication that we would provide for our own families. â⬠At our clinic, we offer these tips for better health. We believe in empowering our patients with the knowledge to enable them to make better lifestyle choices. (Donaldson, 1999) 1. Donââ¬â¢t smoke. If you can, stop. If you canââ¬â¢t, cut down. 2. Follow a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables. 3. Keep physically active. 4. Manage stress by, for example, talking things through and making time to relax. 5. If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation. 6. Cover up in the sun, and protect children from sunburn. 7. Practice safer sex. 8. Take up cancer-screening opportunities. 9. Be safe on the roads: follow the Highway Code 10. Learn the First Aid ABCs: airways, breathing, and circulation. Identify three (3) performance measures you would use to measure the clinicââ¬â¢s effectiveness and provide the rationale for each performance measure. The three performance measures that I would use are customer-client surveys, outcomes and efficiency, and operations. (L, B, Xu, 2001) (R. Griffith, 2010) Customer-client surveys are important, because we need to know if patients are happy with the care they are receiving from us. If they are not happy, it could hurt our bottom line. Word-of-mouth travels fast, negative or positive. Every tenth patient should receive a survey, since randomness yields better results. Bryant) I would ask questions, such as: * Was your appointment time adhered to? If not, how many minutes late? * Do you feel that you had enough time to express your concerns with your healthcare professional, or did you feel rushed during the appointment? * What are your thoughts on our check-in process? The outcomes and efficiency performance is extremely critical, because our goal is to decrease hospitalizations, and to manage illnesses. This will decrease healthcare costs overall. If too many of our patients are being hospitalized, then that means something needs to be fixed. The patients are either not following clinician directives, not coming for follow-up appointments, or we may not have enough physicians on staff. (R. Griffith, 2010) There is a critical shortage of primary care physicians in this country, due to the lure of more financially lucrative specialties. (Herrick, 2010) Last, but not least, is operations. In order to know what is really going on in the organization, you must speak with the employees that are on the forefront. They can offer suggestions for streamlining tasks, such as customer check-in. They are usually the first people that hear raise or complaints from the patient, so their feedback is invaluable. How would you approach decisions regarding clinic expansion and annual plan approval? Due to the healthcare reform laws that were passed during the Obama Administration, there is a very real possibility that many people will be dropped from their employer-sponsored healthcare to the increased costs in 2014. (Diamond, 2010) Four m ajor U. S. firms have come to the realization that millions, possibly, billions of dollars can be kept in the company coffers if they decide to cease healthcare benefits for their employees. The companiesââ¬âATT, Caterpillar, Deere, and Verizon Communicationsââ¬âmade announcements in March and April of 2010 that it would less costly to pay the government-imposed fines, as opposed to absorbing the increased costs of the overhaul. The bill reduces employersââ¬â¢ tax deductions. To accommodate these patients during their transition from traditional employer-sponsored plans to government-based plans (including, but not limited to, Medicaid, insurance through the exchanges, etc. ), more clinics need to be opened to handle the impending influx of people who will be seeking care. The federal government will provide funding to clinics as part of their primary care initiatives, which will provide capital to help cover the costs of expansion. We need to expand our practice, and have these additional clinics up and running before this legislation takes effect. We need to keep the continuity of care momentum going strong in our communities. How would you describe the role of the clinic as a component of the healthcare delivery system in your community? The clinicââ¬â¢s role in the community is of the utmost importance, especially in todayââ¬â¢s financial climate. Many of our citizens are uninsured or underinsured. Due to the deterioration of the American economy, many people put cut healthcare from their tightened budgets. There have been reports of a decline in office visits since we have been in this recession. Clinics are needed to provide preventative and illness care, at an affordable cost, to the people. Due to the health reform legislation, which stresses preventative healthcare as one of its focuses, clinics will play a major role in the delivery of healthcare in this country, as they should. It is more cost-effective to utilize a clinic to manage chronic illnesses such as diabetes, instead of going to the emergency room due to uncontrolled diabetes. How has public healthcare policy influenced the formation of outpatient clinics in the healthcare system? God Is our creator, the Lord has given us everything we know of; he has made us were made and where we came from so he does not discriminate. Characteristics of God God is all knowing, as he created everything with intentions for things to ultimately be the way things are. God is a leader, strong and caring; as he is not afraid of the dark, to lead and show others the true way. Attitude towards God The perspective of this Psalm towards God is very intimate and close. It gives off very positive images towards Gods way of life as well. Relations with the Author I dont really relate to this poem as personally as the author did, as I am not a very religious person so God doesnt play a huge role in my life as it would for some others to be honest. Im very indifferent towards God. The Psalm tells me that Gods feelings towards me are that of understanding and love. God is always there for the lost individuals in crisisPsalm 139 doesnt change how I view myself but it does give me more of a perspective or understanding towards all those that believe the in the Lord. (As it is written that the lord is always there no matter where I am; none discriminating. I believe that psalm should effect how we treat others, because this piece of writing explains ones belief and trust in God; we should respect everybodys view and take on religion and life, particularly in a world, where religion leads many people to do drastic things.

P1 free essay sample
P1 There are a number of features of the natural environment that will want protecting from development. Natural Habitats A natural habitat is an area of nature where an organism or an ecological community can live and where it can find food, shelter, protection and mates for reproduction. Natural habitats are very important to take into consideration when planning development as they are not to be interfered with by humans. Natural habitats should be protected, not destroyed. Habitat loss is one of the greatest threats to species diversity and the natural world that we live in. A large proportion of Britains natural amenities have already been destroyed for construction and now environmentalists are attempting to restore as many natural habitats as possible. Wildlife Wildlife is native life that exists within a geographical location. Wildlife maintains an ecological balance between food chains and food webs. Wildlife contributes in the maintenance of carbon and nitrogen cycles that are processed. We will write a custom essay sample on P1 or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Many people see wildlife as a natural beauty, lighting up scenery and making the environment look established. Wildlife provides us with a number of useful products like food and medicine. There is a wide range of wildlife in Britain, for example, birds, seals, whales, fish, snakes, otters, all which are left alone to ensure they develop within their distinguished environment. This means limiting human intervention. If humans disturb wildlife too much, it can cause some species to be extinct. Heritage Heritage can be seen as physical elements that have cultural significants, relating to things of historic or cultural value that are worthy of preserving for the future. Heritage is very high valued and is unique to a certain time or location in history. Heritage is not just land; it is also the structures that stand upon it. This includes the following: battlefields, ancient monuments, castles, bridges and archaeological sites. It is extremely important that we take care of Heritage for the benefit of our future generations to enjoy and remember distinguished moments in history. Green Belts A green belt is an area of green land that surrounds a community and provides an attractive and aesthetic appearance. Green belts are often used as zones between different land uses to help maintain a clean, fresh and natural land that all of the community can experience and enjoy. Green belts are commonly found around larger cities. The main purpose of the green belt policy is to protect the land from urban sprawl. Green belt land is protected. Water Quality Water for human consumption is mainly extracted from reservoirs. This water then has to be treated before it can be classified as drinking water. Water is distributed around the UK using a system of pipework. Water cannot contain any harmful elements such as bacteria, as this could have an immediate effect on peoples health. In many foreign countries water tends to be bottled as mineral water due to the short supply of pure, fresh and clean water. In the UK we use drinking water to flush toilets. Water quality is often determined by the journey that it goes through to get to the aquifer, meaning it avoids getting infected with materials that can be harmful. Forestry A forest is a large area covered primarily by trees and undergrowth. Forests are an important part of Earths climate system. Trees absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and store it in their trunks, roots, leaves, and forest soils. Besides providing habitats for of animals, forests can also help prevent flooding. During times of heavy rainfall, forests can help absorb water and slow flood flows down, which in turn prevents damage to land and buildings. M2 A pre-construction environmental impact report is an initial assessment of the natural environment that must be considered during the planning stages of the construction project. An environmental impact report can also be known as an environment impact assessment (EIA). There are a number of different stages in an EIA, all of which are very important as they exam what impact the construction project will have on the natural environment and how to go about mitigating the impact. Screening (The first stage is screening. Screening basically means looking at construction project and seeing whether it would be necessary to carry out an EIA, giving a brief reason why.) For this construction project to go ahead, we (ABC developments Ltd) would need to carry out an EIA, as the located area is known as a green belt unspoiled landscape. Green belt land is highly protected; therefore our EIA would have to be carried out thoroughly. Scoping (The second stage is scoping. Scoping is a way of deciding which impacts must be assessed. This will vary depending on the project and location.) For this construction project, we would identify all the potential impacts that could occur and have a negative effective on a number of different environmental features. Below is a list of all the environmental features that we would need to assess. Wildlife Habitats Soil quality Ground water quality Air quality Landscape Heritage Baseline Study (The third stage is the baseline study. Baseline study is a way of collect data on the current state of the area. This takes into account physical, biological, socio-economic and cultural factors.) For this construction project, we would look for a variety of evidence to state that certain elements are present in the located area. Taking samples of the ground is a great way of highlighting whats underneath the surface, especially if we are unsure. We can never rely on previous data assumptions. We always collect our own data against the stated elements in the scope. We would intentionally use subject matter experts, like local authorities to provide us with the knowledge. Biological features are always good to look for as they can indicate to us that there is wildlife present. Other than actual sightings, animal droppings and mole hills can be used as evidence to state that wildlife is present. Impact Prediction (The fourth stage is the impact prediction. Impact prediction is a way of highlighting what the consequences are if the project goes ahead.) There are many possible consequences that could occur if we dont plan the development carefully. The possible consequences include the following: Habitats could be ruined and destroyed, leaving some animals vulnerable. Soil quality could be ruined and PH levels could drop dramatically, causing nutrient degradation. Plant species could be destroyed, meaning they wont be able to contribute in helping to regulate atmospheric gases through a process called photosynthesis. Water pollution could occur if reactive materials and substances spill into waterways, potentially killing aquatic species. Air pollution could occur if harmful substances are released into Earths atmosphere. Air pollution can cause diseases, allergies or death of humans. It may also cause harm to other living organisms such as animals and plants, damaging the natural environment itself, which would be devastating for a green belt. Mitigation (The fifth stage is mitigation. Mitigation is a way of reducing consequences and preventing a negative impact. It is also important to state alternatives and if needs be, redesign the project.) For this construction process we would use a variety of different mitigation measures to effectively change the impact of the development. Below is a list of all the mitigation measures that we would adopt, but before doing anything, we would make sure all environmental features have been identified. We would make sure required protection measures are present on site (e.g. signs and fencing). This is done for awareness, so that the environmental features within the site are recognised. We would phase out and direct site clearing activities, especially when transporting materials and fuels. This will ensure that wildlife and the landscape are not destroyed by any heavy moving vehicles. We would introduce large physical containers on site to store any potentially polluting substances that can cause serious harm to the environment if spilt. A good example would be a bunded fuel tank. Although these tanks are deemed safe, we would still keep them well away from existing environmental features such as habitats and waterways. Also we would provide regular serviced spill kits on site as a secondary safety element. We would put into place physical barriers to prevent ruining water from washing harmful substances into waterways. We would create temporary and permanent conservation habitats for already existing animals that are seen to be native, all depending on the location of the development. We would give guidance to workers on how to deal with wildlife encounters, including any species at risk that may be present, as well as arranging methods for dealing with injured or orphaned wildlife. We would often use the pre-stressing method as mitigation measure for wildlife. Pre-stressing is used to encourage wildlife to move away from a site prior to the development works. The most common methods of pre-stressing include walking around site, making a loud noise, or placing pieces of clothing that carry a strong human scent into animal dens. The greatest disruption to wildlife generally occurs when the site is getting cleared, removing most of the existing habitat. The timing of site clearing should be carefully examined, due to the fact that wildlife will be more sensitive at certain times during the year. The table below shows the sensitive times for wildlife in various different habitats and states what the recommendations are for reducing the impacts of construction. http://documents.ottawa. ca/sites/documents.ottawa.ca/files/documents/construction_en.pdf If possible, development work should be completed effectively outside of the known sensitive timing windows, which in turn reduces the risk of impact to moderate. In some cases development may occur during the sensitive times of the year. This would mean that we would have to introduce additional mitigation measures to reduce the impact to wildlife. Additional mitigation measures include the following: Introduce more intensive pre-stressing to encourage local wildlife to leave the site area. Installation of suitable nesting boxes around the outside edge of the site, to intentionally replace current nesting sites that will be removed in the development works Qualified and trained agents on site to provide monitoring during development works Pre-arrangements made with wildlife rehabilitators and qualified veterinarians to ensure appropriate care of orphaned or injured wildlife. By doing all this it means that the wildlifes safety and wellbeing is a priority. Monitoring and Assessing (The sixth stage is monitoring and assessing.) We would monitor and assess the environmental features on a regular basis as things are always evolving. Letter D1 It is extremely important to address the environmental issues surrounding a construction project. This is in turn will benefit the community and the individual construction firms. By addressing the environmental issues, it will help boost the construction firms reputation with the local community and authority. Individual construction firms should use locally sourced materials that can be used without negatively affecting the environment. By using locally sourced materials it also means that there is less need to travel and transport materials. It is essential that these locally sourced materials are renewable and non-toxic, so that they are deemed safe for the environment and for the local community. Ideally these materials should be recyclable. Metals for example, can be extremely damaging to the environment, especially over several years. A lot of metals are not biodegradable; therefore, they would have to be effectively removed as they are not capable of being decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms. Wood on the other hand is both biodegradable and recyclable, as well as being natures most versatile building material due to its applications becoming more and more advanced. Communicating clearly with sub- contractors is essential when using locally sourced sustainable materials. It is important that sub-contractors use these materials appropriately, ensuring that they are not wasted. Sub-contractors should be given lists of suppliers that they can use, especially if local authorities have a say on what type of materials should be used.

MIT students work to improve their communities in different ways, from tackling the worldââ¬â¢s biggest challenges to being a good friend. How has that world shaped your dreams and aspirations? (200-250 words) Tell us about the most significant challenge youââ¬â¢ve faced or something important that didnââ¬â¢t go according to plan. How did you manage the situation? (200-250 words) Now that we know what the prompts are, let's learn how to answer them effectively. MIT Essays, Analyzed In this section, weââ¬â¢ll be looking at each of the five MIT essays in depth. Remember, every applicant must answer every one of the MIT essay prompts, so you donââ¬â¢t get to choose which essay you would like to write. You have to answer all five of the MIT essay prompts (and do so strongly) in order to present the best application possible. Letââ¬â¢s take a look at the five MIT supplemental essay questions and see what the admissions committee wants to hear from each. MIT Essay Prompt #1 We know you lead a busy life, full of activities, many of which are required of you. Tell us about something you do simply for the pleasure of it. (100 words or fewer) This MIT essay prompt is very broad. The structure of the prompt indicates that the committee is interested in learning about your curiosity inside and outside of the classroom, so donââ¬â¢t feel like you have to your work to what you love about academics and school. This MIT essay is your opportunity to show a different side of your personality than the admissions committee will see on the rest of your application. This essay is your chance to show yourself as a well-rounded person who has a variety of different interests and talents. Choose a specific activity here. You donââ¬â¢t need to present a laundry list of activities - simply pick one thing and describe in detail why you enjoy it. You could talk about anything from your love of makeup tutorials on YouTube to the board game nights you have with your family. The key here is to pick something that youââ¬â¢re truly passionate about. Donââ¬â¢t feel limited to interests relating to your potential major. MITââ¬â¢s second prompt is all about that, so in this first prompt forget about what the school ââ¬Å"wants to readâ⬠and be yourself! In fact, describing your experience in or passion for a different field will better show that youââ¬â¢re curious and open to new ideas. If you love playing games, the first MIT essay prompt is the time to talk about that passion. MIT Prompt #2 Although you may not yet know what you want to major in, which department or program at MIT appeals to you and why? (100 words or fewer). This question sets you up for success: it targets your area of interest but doesnââ¬â¢t pigeon-hole you. This essay is where your formal education will be most important. They want to know what kind of academic life you may lead in college so keep it brief, but allow your excitement for learning to drive these words. You are, after all, applying to MIT - they want to know about your academic side. You should demonstrate your knowledge of and affinity for MIT in this essay. Donââ¬â¢t just say that you admire the MIT engineering program - explain exactly what it is about the engineering program that appeals to you. You can call out specific professors or classes that are of interest to you. Doing so helps show that you truly want to go to MIT and have done your research. MIT Prompt #3 At MIT, we bring people together to better the lives of others. MIT students work to improve their communities in different ways, from tackling the worldââ¬â¢s biggest challenges to being a good friend. Describe one way in which you have contributed to your community, whether in your family, the classroom, your neighborhood, etc. (200-250 words) This MIT prompt is by far the most specific, so be specific in your answer. Pick one experience thatââ¬â¢s meaningful to you to discuss here. The prompt doesnââ¬â¢t specify that you have to talk about something academic or personal. It can be anything that youââ¬â¢ve done where you have contributed to any community - your dance troupe, gaming friends, debate team teammates. A community can be anything; it doesnââ¬â¢t just refer to your hometown, scholastic or religious community. The trick to answering this prompt is to find a concrete example and stick to it. Donââ¬â¢t, for instance, say that you try to recycle because the environment is meaningful to you, because it wonââ¬â¢t sound sincere. Rather, you can talk about why picking up garbage in the park where you played baseball as a child has deeper meaning because youââ¬â¢re protecting a place that youââ¬â¢ve loved for a long time. You should talk about something that is uniquely important to you, not the other thousands of students that are applying to MIT. Pick something that is really meaningful to you. Your essay should feel sincere. Donââ¬â¢t write what you think the committee wants to hear. Theyââ¬â¢ll be more impressed by a meaningful experience that rings true than one that seems artificial or implausible. MIT Prompt #4 Describe the world you come from; for example, your family, clubs, school, community, city, or town. How has that world shaped your dreams and aspirations? (200-250 words) Donââ¬â¢t repeat information that the committee can find elsewhere on your application. Take the time to share fun, personal details about yourself. For instance, do you make awesome, screen-accurate cosplays or have a collection of rock crystals from caving expeditions? Think about what you love to do in your spare time. Be specific - the committee wants to get a real picture of you as a person. Donââ¬â¢t just say that you love to play video games, say exactly which video games you love and why. MIT wants to know about your community - the friends, family, teammates, etc. who make up your current life. All of those people have affected you in some way - this prompt is your chance to reflect on that influence and expand on it. You can talk about the deep bonds you have and how they have affected you. Showing your relationships to others gives the committee a better idea of how you will fit in on MITââ¬â¢s campus. All in all, this MIT essay is a great opportunity to have some fun and show off some different aspects of your personality. Let yourself shine! MIT Prompt #5 Tell us about the most significant challenge youââ¬â¢ve faced or something important that didnââ¬â¢t go according to plan. How did you manage the situation? (200-250 words) The most important thing to remember with this essay prompt is to be specific. The committee doesnââ¬â¢t want you to wax poetic on how you try to keep a positive outlook on life; they want to see how a real-life example has affected you. The example you pick doesnââ¬â¢t have to be large or earth-shattering. In fact, it can be small - maybe you forgot your notes for your debate and were worried about how you would let your teammates down. Maybe you broke your leg right before the final game of the season and had to sit on the sideline. The experience you choose doesnââ¬â¢t have to be universally seen as difficult; it just has to feel that way for you. Make sure that you show how you overcame the problem. Your strategy doesnââ¬â¢t have to be perfect. In fact, the prompt specifically asks you how you managed things that didnââ¬â¢t go according to plan. Youââ¬â¢ll want to show that you are flexible, quick on your feet, and open to new situations. You can talk about how you were frustrated or angry or scared as the events were unfolding, but you ultimately want to show that you were able to emerge on the other side with a lesson learned. How to Write a Great MIT Essay Regardless of which MIT essay prompt youââ¬â¢re responding to, you should keep in mind the following tips for how to write a great MIT essay. #1: Use Your Own Voice The point of a college essay is for the admissions committee to have the chance to get to know you beyond your test scores, grades, and honors. Your admissions essays are your opportunity to make yourself come alive for the essay readers and to present yourself as a fully fleshed out person. You should, then, make sure that the person youââ¬â¢re presenting in your college essays is yourself. Donââ¬â¢t try to emulate what you think the committee wants to hear or try to act like someone youââ¬â¢re not. If you lie or exaggerate, your essay will come across as insincere, which will diminish its effectiveness. Stick to telling real stories about the person you really are, not who you think MIT wants you to be. You're the star of the show in your MIT essays! Make sure your work reflects who you are as a student and person, not who you think the admissions committee wants you to be. #2: Avoid Cliches and Overused Phrases When writing your MIT essays, try to avoid using cliches or overused quotes or phrases. These include quotations that have been quoted to death and phrases or idioms that are overused in daily life. The college admissions committee has probably seen numerous essays that state, ââ¬Å"Be the change you want to see in the world.â⬠Strive for originality. Similarly, avoid using cliches, which take away from the strength and sincerity of your work. Your work should be straightforward and authentic. #3: Check Your Work It should almost go without saying, but you want to make sure your MIT essays are the strongest example of your work possible. Before you turn in your MIT application, make sure to edit and proofread your essays. Your work should be free of spelling and grammar errors. Make sure to run your essays through a spelling and grammar check before you submit. Itââ¬â¢s a good idea to have someone else read your MIT essays, too. You can seek a second opinion on your work from a parent, teacher, or friend. Ask them whether your work represents you as a student and person. Have them check and make sure you havenââ¬â¢t missed any small writing errors. Having a second opinion will help your work be the best it possibly can be. #4: Demonstrate Your Love for MIT MITââ¬â¢s five essay prompts are specific to MIT. Keep that in mind as youââ¬â¢re answering them, particularly when you attack prompt two. Show why MIT is your dream school - what aspects of the education and community there are most attractive to you as a student. MIT receives thousands of applications, from students who have different levels of interest in the university. The more you can show that you really want to go to MIT, the more the school will be interested in your application. Your passion for MIT may even give you a leg up on other applicants. Marketing is a highly misunderstood word. It is not tactics or methods of getting customers to buy a companyââ¬â¢s product or services. That is advertisement or promotions. It is a conscious effort to analyze and understand what is needed and trying to fulfill this need. Marketing is about understanding the stakeholders. It is highly relevant to investigate what each stakeholder contributes in terms of the product, quality, service deliveries and pricing. Marketing is also about knowledge of your own company and its capability of delivering a product or service and managing its resources and competencies in that direction. But above all, Marketing is all about customers. Their behavior and attitude towards buying a product is of paramount importance. Their needs and wants and their likes and dislikes are decisive factors and purchase decisions depend on these issues. It is the understanding of these factors that will develop a marketing strategy. Therefore Marketing is all about understanding the customers and of finding ways and means to for providing product or service as per his requirements. Marketers have adopted a variety of means to persuade customers, foremost among them being advertisement, promotion, publicity and public relations. However unless a proper commutation channel is established the efforts will go in vain. Advertising and promotions both need effective communication to produce successful results. Kotler et al (1996) have pointed out persuasive communication is designed to stimulate a pre-defined response from consumers and advertisers use this ploy to gain advantage over susceptible consumers.
